Thermo Auricular Therapy – Ear Candling

images0HB8XJ3A Thermo Auricular Therapy is the technique and training for the popular natural therapy of Ear Candling.  Ear candles have long been recognised and used successfully by therapists for many decades to treat numerous conditions and balancing the body for overall wellness.  I have only ever used Biosun ear candles on my family and clients and have found them to be very effective, safe and calming especially for babies and young children. You can relax with confidence as they are certified CE 93/42/EEC in Europe and made in Germany.

This is a gentle and soothing therapy that works by the gentle vibrations of warmed air in a fine, hollow candle that is placed in the ear and lit. This has the effect of the lightest of massages on the eardrum and helps to equalize the pressure in the ears, eustachian tubes and sinuses. The candles used are made from 100% pure beeswax, honey extract and pesticide free cotton. They also contain sage for antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties, St Johns Wort to balance and chamomile to soothe.Anatomyofear

For many people who have suffered with ear infections one after the other, tinnitus, vertigo and allergies, the candles are a gentle and natural alternative to ear syringing and anti-biotics. The heat from the candle eases pain and discomfort in the ear. The ingredients in the cotton vaporize and are drawn down the hollow center of the candle via a ‘chimney effect’. Anything that is the ear is drawn out by the candle and either burned away or collected in the filter. Both ears must be treated for maximum effect and the treatment lasts approximately 30 minutes. Ear Candling is a great treatment to have when recovering from a cold or any of the complaints below.  You may of course simply just want to relax and de-stress and clear the head. Your digestion is directly linked to your ears so if one or the either has symptoms then you need to treat both the stomach and ears in the long term. Antibiotics have been proven to not only upset the delicate flora in the stomach but also the ear canals can become infected, congested and inflamed causing further issues. The ideal time to use the ear candles is after a shower at night, light some candles and soft music  and set the mood for a relaxing massage therapy. Otherwise they should be done as soon as you feel the start of any of the above symptoms before they lead to long term problems  in the ear canal. The ears need wax to protect and lubricate but a build up of wax  causes infection and pressure and if you spend a lot of time in the water this can be detrimental to the ears as well.  With allergy and digestion problems you may want to do this therapy once a month to help balance out these systems once you have them under control.

  1. You will need a small bowl of water, tweezers, lighter and tissues.
  2. Usually the ear candles are too big for the ear canal and need to be made smaller especially for babies and children.  I use a pair of tweezers to do this making sure that you leave the end of the candle circular as much as possible so that the chimney effect works for maximum effect.
  3. If you do not have anyone to hold the candle you are still able to do this but I would suggest laying on the bed or floor and having a mirror in front of you and you will then be able to see the candle burning. Have the bowl of water in front of you, some tissues and light music and you are ready to go. untitled
  4. You need to be comfortable laying down on your back or side with your head turned to the side and you should be doing the ear that is worse first. Once the candle is lite the flame usually dies down and just smoulders. Insert gently into the ear, turning slowly so that it fits snugly but tight. This will be like a draught effect loosening anything and bringing the wax up through to the filter. Make sure that the candle is kept upright once inside the ear.
  5. The candle will take between 8 to 15 minutes to burn. The time depends on how much wax and congestion there is in the ear. The candle will fizz and crackle and get warm but not hot which is normal. Sometimes a popping sound is heard and this can be some lumps of wax coming up! Do not worry and just burn the candle until you reach the red line.
  6. Once you reach the red line then take the candle out of the ear and extinguish in the bowl of water. If you want to see what has come out of your ear then you can open the candle along the seam and see what is inside.   If the wax is dark and honey coloured then this is old wax usually more than 3 months old. If the wax is very light in colour then this is new.
  7. Now you can turn over and continue with the other ear. Once both ears have been done relax for a little while before getting up.  Sometimes your balance can be affected but this is very temporary and makes you feel very relaxed and remember to drink a glass of water.

Repeating the ear candling 24 hours later will help with acute cases of wax build up, inflammation or cold symptoms.  Normally ear candling should be done on a monthly basis for all other ailments. Home Remedies for the Ears

Your ears will love this home made remedy. It is safe, soothing and helps any inflammation, infection and protects the inner ear by breaking down hard and old wax, which is usually the start of all earache problems.  Garlic is one of those wonder foods that protects and helps the immune system – it is antibacterial, acts as a decongestant and lowers blood cholesterol. This receipe will garlicmake enough mixture to fit into a small dropper bottle about 30ml in size.

  1. Crush 1 Clove of garlic into the bottle, making sure that everything from the garlic goes into the bottle (the antibacterial  properties are all in the oil of the garlic)
  2. Add about half a dozen drops of pure Lavender Essential Oil – this just helps to cover the smell of the high concentrate of the garlic 
  3. Add about 5 to 8 drops of pure Tea Tree Essential Oils – which adds the antiseptic
  4. Top up the bottle with pure apple juice and olive oil

lavenderoilKeep the remedy in the fridge and every night just before you go to bed use the dropper to take some out and warm this up as the ears do not like anything cold. Put half a dozen drops in each ear and a small piece of cotton wool acting as an ear plug so that the oil does not come out when you go to sleep.  Keep using every night and the hopi ear candles periodically. Addressing the diet will make an even bigger impact to overcome your long term goals.


Chamomile is another herb that is excellent for infections inside the ear and if you have had your ears pierced this will also help to chamomilesooth as an antiseptic treatment.  Boil up a chamomile teabag and when cooled enough, place this on the infected area to clear the infection and ease the pain. Apply three times a day for acute relief. You can keep the liquid in the fridge and just heat up again when needed.

Probiotics If you have been on antibiotics then look at also taking a good probiotic.  This will help keep the stomach bacteria in the correct balance and in turn will alleviate the pressure on the ears.
