Blood Type O – Dietary Advice


The ideal diet for Blood Type O should consist of animal proteins and include intense physical exercise. The success of this blood type diet depends on your use of lean meats, poultry and fish. This blood type does not tolerate grains and dairy products in the digestive system quite so well. These foods are not particularly friendly to your digestion in fact it does the opposite and slows down and inhibits proper absorption. The leading factor in weight gain for this blood type is gluten as this also inhibits insulin metabolism and interferes with the use of calories for energy. Eating gluten on a daily basis is like putting the wrong type of oil in a car, instead of fuelling the engine it clogs it up and deposits fat into muscle tissue eventually exhausting the body and adding weight. Another factor to take into consideration is that this blood type leads to thyroid problems mainly because they do not have enough iodine whose sole purpose is to produce thyroid hormones. A good supplement of iodine or eat foods rich in iodine will overcome this problem.

Water in itself should have a special mention. Our bodies need water constantly for cleansing and replenishing the body systems, without water we would die. It goes without saying that we should drink on average between 1 to 2 litres per day depending on your activity and lifestyle.

Foods that Encourage Weight Gain

  • Wheat, gluten and sweet corn; these foods interfere with insulin production and slow metabolism.
  • Kidney beans, lima or butter beans and lentils; are foods that impair calorie utilization.
  • Cabbage, Brussel sprouts and cauliflower inhibit thyroid production.

Foods that Encourage Weight Loss

  • Kelp, seafood and iodized salt; these foods contain iodine and increases thyroid production.
  • Liver, red meat, kale, spinach and broccoli –aid efficient metabolism.

Meat & Poultry

Eat lean beef, lamb, turkey, chicken and fish. The more stressful your life is and if you do a lot of exercise then eat more protein. You must be careful to balance meat proteins with the appropriate vegetables and fruits to avoid over acidification which can cause irritation of the stomach lining and eventually cause ulcers.

Dairy Products

This blood group should severely restrict their use of dairy consumption. Many African’s are lactose intolerant. Soya milk and cheese are excellent alternatives. This blood type is also high for intolerances and food allergies that affect the immune system.

Fish & Seafood

Seafood the second most concentrated animal protein is best suited for this blood group especially of Asian and Euroasian descent. Fish oils are high in Vitamin K which promotes blood clotting and this blood group generally have thin blood therefore these oils are beneficial in a number of ways.

Cereals, Breads, Grains & Pasta

This blood group does not tolerate whole wheat products at all and should be eliminated from the diet. Wheat contains lectins that interfere with the metabolism. Even wheat-free and gluten-free can cause problems over time if eaten too much. The exception is Essene bread which is a live bread and can be found in some health food shops.  

Oils and Fats

This blood group respond well to oils and have a positive effect on the digestion and elimination; also reduces cholesterol.  

Nuts & Seeds

These should be eaten in small amounts and digested properly as colon problems are more susceptible to this blood group.

Vegetables, Sprouts and Fresh Herbs

There are a tremendous amount of vegetables that this blood group can eat but be careful of the ones that affect the thyroid – Brussels, cabbage, cauliflower. The moulds in mushrooms and some fermented olives tend to trigger allergic reactions and alfalfa sprouts can irritate the digestive tract in some. The nightshade vegetables like aubergines and potatoes can cause arthritic conditions. Sometimes too many tomatoes can also cause a problem to arthritic sufferers. 


Fruits in the red, blue and purple colour range are beneficial to this blood type as they tend to alkaline rather than go acidic. The digestive tract has high acidity and needs to be balanced with more alkaline to reduce irritation. Melons are alkalining but cantaloupe and honeydew should be avoided as they contain high amounts of mould which leads on to candida. Oranges, tangerines, strawberries and blackberries are also high in acid. This blood type also has to be wary of coconut products. 


Vegetable juices are highly beneficial to this blood type rather than fruit juices because of their alkalinity. Avoid high sugar juices like apple and apple cider. Pineapple juice can be particularly helpful in avoiding water retention and bloating. 

Spices, Herbs & Flavourings

The right combination of spices can be a powerful immune system booster. 


There are no benefits to this blood type from these foods so keep to moderation. The vinegars are particularly irritating to the digestive system. Best choices are oils, lemon juice and garlic for flavourings. 

Herbal Teas

Herbal teas should be drunk by this blood group as to rev up the immune system. Certain herbs are very beneficial and give protection against cardiovascular disease and cancer.  


Most of the beverages are too acidic so keep to a minimum.


This blood group would benefit from extra Vitamin C for absorption.  Extra Vitamin B’s would also help to charge the metabolism as this blood group tends to be sluggish.  A good supplement of calcium, magnesium and manganese and iodine will help support thyroid function.
