Blood Type A – Dietary Advice

BLOOD TYPE A – DIETARY ADVICE

The ideal diet type for this blood group is to be a VEGETARIAN.  In this blood group the digestive tract tends to be more sensitive and meat slows up the metabolism and produces more acid.  This blood group also has a sensitive immune system and the processing of certain foods and meat do not help and in fact this group has a tendency to have more intolerances and allergies than the other blood groups.  It is wise to eat foods that are natural, fresh, pure and organic.  This blood group will lose weight quickly when they eliminate meat from their diet and will have an increase in energy. Fluid retention is also a problem when eating meat as this slows the metabolism and consequently meat gets stored as fat. The reason for this difference is in the stomach acid – absorption.  This blood group has a low stomach acid.  To increase alkalinity and balance stomach acid you need to drink water and lemon and keep to foods that support the stomach i.e. water, lemon, grapes, watermelon, calcium and food enzymes.

Water in itself should have a special mention. Our bodies need water constantly for cleansing and replenishing the body systems, without water we would die.  It goes without saying that we should drink on average between 1 to 2 litres per day depending on your activity and lifestyle.

Foods that Encourage Weight Gain

  • Meat is poorly digested and stored as fat
  • Dairy foods provoke insulin reaction
  • Kidney & Lima beans provoke insulin reaction and slow metabolic rate
  • Wheat makes muscle tissue acidic and impairs calorie utilization.

Foods that Encourage Weight Loss

  • Vegetable oils aid efficient digestion and prevents fluid retention
  • Soya foods aid efficient digestion and metabolizes quickly for optimum immune system function
  • Vegetables aid efficient metabolism
  • Pineapple increases intestinal mobility and calorie utilization

Meat & Poultry

Basically this blood group should avoid eating meat especially processed.  It is difficult to change the diet drastically but with careful planning and using chicken and fish as an alternative this will become easier with time. By reducing in these products you will also reduce the risk factors associated for heart disease and cancer for this blood group.

Dairy Products

This blood group should be careful with dairy products and avoid anything made from whole milk and also limit eggs.  Good choices of dairy are yoghurt, kefir and cultured dairy products.  Avoid all other dairy products not made from soya milk and goat’s milk.  This blood group produces more mucus than other blood types therefore dairy will increase mucus and affect allergies and respiratory problems. Too much mucus can produce various bacteria and an overabundance can cause infections and respiratory problems. Candida is also a problem for this blood type.

Fish & Seafood

This blood group can eat seafood but in modest quantities 3 – 4 times a week but should avoid flat fish like sole and plaice as they contain lectins that can irritate the digestive tract. If your family have a history of breast cancer consider introducing snails into your diet!!!  The edible snails contain a powerful lectin that specifically agglutinates and is drawn to mutated Type A blood cells for two of the most common forms of breast cancer.

Cereals, Grains & Pasta

This blood group generally does well on cereals and grains but limit wheat consumption as this causes mucus production. You must be sure to balance the intake of wheat which is acid forming with alkaline forming foods i.e. fruit and vegetables.  This is not so much the stomach acid but also the acid/alkaline balance in muscle tissue.  The inner kernel of wheat grain is alkaline in Blood Group Type O but becomes acidic in Blood Group Type A. If you are following a vegetarian diet then these foods are an excellent source of vegetable protein however stay away from the processed, frozen and prepared meals as these have very little nutrients in.

Breads and Crispbreads

Generally this follows on from the cereals category as a guideline.  In the sprouted-wheat Essene bread the gluten lectin is destroyed in the sprouting process but be aware of the commercial type as this often contains small amounts of sprouted wheat.

Oils and Fats

This blood group need very little fat to function well but a tablespoon of olive oil, macadamia or UDO’s oil on salads or vegetables every day will aid digestion and elimination and has a positive effect on reducing cholesterol. The lectins in oils such as corn and safflower cause problems in the digestive tract for this blood type so would be best to avoid these.

Nuts and Seeds

These should be eaten in small amounts and with caution as they contain insulin inhibiting lectins that make them a problem for this blood type. On the other hand this blood group can tolerate peanuts which are a powerful immune booster.

Vegetables, Sprouts and Fresh Herbs

These foods should be eaten several times a day to aid the immune system and provide essential minerals, enzymes, and antioxidants. Peppers and fermented olives aggravate the stomach. Lectins in most potatoes, sweet potatoes, yams and cabbage can cause problems in the digestive tract. Tomatoes are very bad for this Blood Group and Type B.  Positive foods for this group are broccoli, garlic, carrots, kale, pumpkin and spinach. Garlic and yellow onions provide an antioxidant that boosts the immune system. Tofu as a source of protein is a nutritionally complete food for this blood group.

Fruits

This blood group should eat fresh fruit 3 times a day and go for the more alkaline fruits such as berries and plums. Melons are also alkaline but they have a high mould count which makes them difficult for this blood group to digest. Mangoes and papaya contain a digestive enzyme that is good for the other blood types but not for Blood Type A. Oranges and bananas also irritate the stomach but freshly squeezed lemon juice or grapefruit juice in warm water is ideal.

Juices

This blood group should start the day with lemon in warm water.  This will help reduce the mucus that has built up over night. Ideally this group should make their own juices which are high in antioxidants and alkalinity. Best to keep away from the high sugar juices what are more acid forming.

Spices, Herbs & Flavourings

The right combination of spices can be a powerful immune system booster such as tamari, miso and soy sauce. Blackstrap molasses is a very good source of iron, a mineral that is often lacking in this blood group. Vinegar should be avoided because of its acidity.  Sugar and chocolate should be kept to a minimum as these make the system sluggish.

Condiments

This blood group in particular should avoid products with pickles and vinegar because of their low levels of stomach acid. Ketchup is not easily digested either.

Herbal Teas

Herbal teas should be drunk by this blood type to rev up the immune system. Certain herbs are very beneficial to this group as well and gives protection against cardiovascular disease and cancer. Camomile and valerian root are perfect for stress. However, red clover and cornsilk should be avoided.

Beverages

Red wine is particularly good for this blood group and helps reduce heart disease for both men and women. Alternate between coffee and green tea to balance the acidity in the body.  All other beverages should be avoided as they do not suit this blood group.

Supplements

This blood group is generally deficient in Vitamin B12 and have a difficult time in absorbing.  You will need to keep your immune system healthy with a good supply of antioxidants and to also prevent infections and strengthen the heart and circulation.  You would be wise to focus on the following supplements to add extra nutrients to your lacking diet in order to support these systems and absorption.

  • Vitamin B12
  • Vitamin C
  • Vitamin E
  • Calcium
  • Iron

Just one last thing …
